Why Calm Parent
Built by a parent who needed it.
Written by a teacher who knows.
I built this because I was the parent frantically googling at the worst moments. “How do I get him to stop screaming.” “What do I do when he hits his sister.” “I’ve just shouted at my child — how do I repair it.”
I tried writing it all down on whiteboards around the house, but I have ADHD, so that went nowhere. I felt awful, and I really wanted to do better. There just wasn’t anywhere I could go that helped me in the moment, with the actual thing that was happening.
So I made it. Calm Parent is the place I couldn’t find.

The method

“When a child melts down, the first thing I do is make sure they're safe, help them settle, and connect — because redirecting before you connect just makes it harder. The biggest mistake adults make is to yell, and to react before they've understood what the child is actually feeling.”
“Connect with the child first, then redirect the behaviour. That's the whole method — and it's the framework Calm Parent follows for every response.”
— Jake, teacher & dad
If you're struggling tonight, start here:
- Ask yourself: what are you already doing well?
- Connect first, then redirect.
- Understand their emotions — and your own — in the heat of the moment.
- A calm breath before you react can change everything.
What this app isn't
It's not a quick fix, and it's not set-and-forget. Calm Parent asks you to adjust your own reactions in the moment. That's the part that actually changes things — and it's the part only you can do.
If it's 9pm and you're exhausted and worried: nothing is forever. This too shall pass. Just focus on getting one small thing right at a time.
